Saturday Sinema: Goldstone

GOLDSTONE
From the director of Mystery Road, film noir meets
Great American Western in the Outback

Available on September 11th via Lightyear Entertainment

"Riveting. Goldstone is the next great Western. You don't wanna miss this one."

And now for something totally different head....

Lightyear Entertainment presents the Australian production Goldstone, a noir thriller set in the Outback. The film was written, directed, shot, edited and composed by Ivan Sen.

Indigenous Detective Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen, Mystery Road) arrives in the frontier town of Goldstone on a missing persons inquiry. What seems like a simple investigation opens a web of crime, corruption, trampling of indigenous people's land rights, and human trafficking. Jay must pull his life together and bury his differences with young local cop Josh (Alex Russell, SWAT), so together they can bring justice to Goldstone.

Also starring 2-time Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom, Silver Linings Playbook) as the corrupt mayor, David Wenham (Lord of the Rings) as the greedy mine director, David Gulpilil (Crocodile Dundee) as the indigenous man who can't be bought, and Cheng Pei-Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as the unscrupulous madam.

Goldstone was nominated for five Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards for Best Film, Best Direction, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Production Design.

Singer-songwriter Trevor Hall has announced the release of a new EP Unpack Your Memories, due out on Vanguard Records on March 27th. This five song collection includes some of Hall’s most personal tracks recorded solely by him, on his laptop.
Hall talks about the history of these songs and why he chose to share them with the world at this time. “Unpack Your Memories  is a collection of songs that have been in my “vault” for a long time now,” Hall says. “Some just didn’t make the other albums and some were just too intimate to share at the time. Now they are ready to breathe and be shared with others. The name of the album says everything … These are all songs that have become memories for me. I am reaching into my bag and unpacking them - unpacking their meaning, the memory of where I was when I wrote them, and the feelings that they brought me so many years ago. As the saying goes, ‘You never meet the same river twice.’ Every time I hear these songs, they teach me something new or offer me the gift of a new perspective.  There are many other songs that are still in my vault, but I felt these were the most important to share at this time. The songs all came up together like the roots of a tree, and have taken form in the EP.”

Get Sassy, With Vassy

Vassy & Crystal Waters Are Hustlin'
"I was in the high school choir and was told I couldn't sing. Then, years later, that teacher heard me singing on a national radio station and ended up writing an apology letter, which is kind of funny." - Vassy

This quote is from a full length interview I did with the sassy Vassy for Chorus and Verse about her single "Beautiful Day."

Cut to it here: http://www.chorusandverse.com/content.php?id=20120607A

Well the Australian born Ms. Karaglorgos, her last name, recently went number #1 on the Billboard Dance Chart with Hustlin'The song pays homage to Crystal Waters’ nineties house classic, "Gypsy Woman."

Crystal Waters has come out in full support of the record, even appearing in the song’s music video.

You've come a long way Ms. Thing! Check out the video after the jump!

Darlene Love: 20 Feet From Stardom

Darlene Love
"Backup singers live in a world that lies just beyond the spotlight. Their voices bring harmony to the biggest bands in popular music, but we've had no idea these singers are or what lives they lead, until now" -
So goes the IMDB synopsis for the Documentary "20 Feet From Stardom" starring one of my favorite people Darlene Love, who jumped those "20 Feet" and became a star and legend that was recently inducted into the Rock-n-Roll Hall Of Fame.
Love has been called the "world's most famous backup singer," but has also appeared on Broadway and in films — most notably as Trish Murtaugh in all four "Lethal Weapon" films. " She hosts a Christmas special in New York City every year, and Harper Collins released her new novel, "My Name is Love," on June 4. She's currently performing in an Australian production of "FAME" as the musical's lead performer.
"People in the biz always give you a lot of lip service about what you should do, but when it comes time to put the bucks down on the table everybody disappears" - Darlene Love
This is an excerpt from and interview I did with Ms. Love about her upcoming (and out now) CD "Concert of Love"- you can read it here:
The movie has received glowing reviews and I for one can not wait to go this week with some comp tickets I got courtesy of Deep Dish!

R.I.P: Chrissy Amphlett "Pleasure and Pain"

Chrissy Amphlett
The 53-year-old Australian singer died at her home in New York City after a battle with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.

My first exposure so to speak to the music of The Divinyls was a kinky little ditty bearing the title "Pleasure and Pain":

"Please don't ask me how I've been getting off, No, Please don't ask me how I've been getting off ,It's a fine line between pleasure and pain, You've done it once, you can do it again"...

Needless to say the Divinyls had me at the title. I rushed out and bought the "What A Life" album on, time to date my oldness, cassette, and loved it!

Of course that was sort of an indie/edgy/underground type of song, their biggest hit "I Touch Myself" a blatant ode to masturbation was huge...I guess because it did not involve the "Pain" part with the "Pleasure".

Chrissy had one of the best pop rock voices ever! Her delivery cut like a knife no matter what she was singing.

Not to be crass, but from the sounds of her death she was living the title of my favorite Divinyls song "Pleasure and Pain" let's hope there was some of the former mixed in with the later, her body is now at rest. Hey Chrissy, I hope you are still kicking vocal ass in the great beyond...!
