Nostalgia's For Geeks

Edward vs Courtney
Edward Norton & Courtney Love
Memory is a powerful thing. It can trigger many emotions, and all of them are fine. I was brought back to a time I remember fondly today, the 90's - it was a Golden Era, for me at least. Movies were great and I actually wanted to see them. Music rocked and I actually wanted to listen to it.

So imagine my my 90's pop culture shock and awe when Courtney Love (yes, I was a big Hole fan. OK insert a dirty joke if you must) and Edward Norton, the it boy of that time. Who starred together in one of the better films of the 90's The People vs Larry Flynt became a couple. Imagine it at the time, do it and do it now!!!

"Yep" I was in a whole lotta 90's fantasia! The Grunge Queen of the 90's paired up with the Actor of the time, damn it does not get any better then this!

I miss that time in my life, in a nostalgic sort of way. But I am at my personal best right here, right now.

OK, time to be present and carry on minions, but always be, be, be nostalgic!

It's NYE 2018!

2018
Courtney Love
It's another year under our collective belts and another one to tackle. What are your hopes and dreams for 2019

My feeling is the years all bleed together and there is not one that is more special than the other. How do I celebrate New Year's Eve? I watch TV, drink wine and give zero F#cks.

Thus for NYE I leave you with memes featuring two of my favorite female artists Courtney Love ringing out 2018 & Madonna ringing in 2019.

Process them anyway you like I don't give a F#ck!

Just Because...Courtney Love

Feel The Love
Courtney Love
Just Because I love her music. Just Because the Hollywood Forever Cemetery is the bomb & Just Because I can. It's a Courtney Love kind of Sunday!

See Courtney attend the Gucci Guilty launch party @ Hollywood Forever. Hey she don't wanna be buried in no Pet Sematary...

I have been a fan of not only Courtney Love's music with and without her band Hole. I am also a fan of her acting. She brings a feral quality to each of her roles and a presence to the big and small screen like no other.

Thus it's great to see her out and about and would be even better to see her act and make music again sometime in the very near future.

Today's Sunday Commandment is do something outside of your comfort zone and bend it like Courtney Love

Mic Drop.

The First "Kut"

Debbie Gibson is pregnant with their two headed love child...NOT!

Rock category Finalist of the UK Songwriting Contest 2017 and Semi-Finalist of the International Songwriting Competition The Kut announced today that the North American release date for their hard-rocking debut album, Valley of Thorns is set for Friday May 18 via Cargo. The album, produced by James Le Rock (Skindred / Def Leppard / White Zombie / My Vitriol) kicks off a busy touring schedule for the band this summer.

Active on the UK and European alt.rock scene, The Kut is the alter-ego of multi-instrumentalist and PhD graduate, Princess Maha, who brings together a multitude of hard rock and alt. rock sounds that bring to mind elements of L7, The Cult, Hole, Magnapop and Placebo. The Kut’s live outfit has seen many guises, with the most recent line up featuring female trio Diana Bartmann (drums)and Stella Vie (bass / bvs). In the last few years, the band has gained traction in Europe by winning spots of the MTV Brand New Unsigned Poll, releasing a subsequent EP release and Record Store Day vinyl 7” and press, radio and TV support from The Guardian, Metro, Scuzz, Kerrang! Magazine, Big Cheese, Planet Rock, BBC Introducing Lancashire, Kerrang! Radio, Metal Hammer, Q, Classic Rock, AXS TV, MTV-U USA and others.
The Bands All Here
The Kut
Live, the band has performed at festivals such as Download, Camden Rocks Festival, Rebellion Festival, Hard Rock Hell, Glastonbudget, Nice N Sleazy and Strummercamp in the UK, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The band has confirmed the following live dates for Summer 2018 in support of Valley of Thorns : Camden Rocks Festival, Amplified Festival, Strummercamp Festival, Nice and Sleazy, Rebellion Festival and more to be added!

2017 was a significant year for The Kut as they were featured as one of Kerrang! Magazine's Breakthrough Acts of the year, while ‘The Kut EP' was released on 500 limited edition picture discs for Record Store Day 2017, also featuring at number 4 in Kerrang! Magazines Top 10 Record Store Day Releases. This past summer saw the band playing 21 consecutive UK dates, and the year ended with the band claiming the Number 1 Spot in the Beyond 50 Promotions Top 50 Under the Radar UK Bands.

But don’t take our word for it. Here’s what the U.K. press has said about The Kut:

The Guardian - Editor’s Pick
“Your snarly singer-guitarist in the latest line up of this doughty girl-grunge trio. Shades of Courtney, Brody and L7, naturally, but with plenty of contemporary haters to aim her barbs at”

Metro
“This trio of multi-talented girls with a ‘90s grunge alt-rock sound have been touring all over Europe”

Kerrang! Magazine
“Led by Princess Maha, this is a neat twist on grunge pop”

Q Magazine
"There's a slice of angst-offloading gutter rock that's a kissing cousin of Hole, but The Kut's scuzz-covered family tree also stretches further back to the garage rampages of The Stooges.”

Metal Hammer
"The Kut are like the bastard lovechild of Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson with awesome riffs and chaotic live shows"

Classic Rock Magazine
"Marks the precise point in the Venn diagram where L7 meets “I Wanna Be Your Dog” meets Courtney Love, which is equal parts terrifying and a cause for long and rowdy celebration. Punk's not dead, pass it on.”

Just Because...Drew Barrymore

Desperately Seeking Drew
Drew Barrymore
Behold a photo of Drew Barrymore out-n-about in New York City this past week. Seeing Drew these days is much like a Big Foot or Loch Ness Monster sighting, very rare. She has kept a low public profile in recent years, and been a more behind the scenes person than an in front of the camera one.

Seeing this image made me feel nostalgic for when Drew was everywhere, doing the Charlie's Angels movies and all those Rom-Coms. Not to mention appearing in and producing one of my fave films Donnie Darko. Now I didn't see any of her Rom-Coms with the exception of The Wedding Singer, which was actually good, but since I am not really a fan of the genre...

I've met Drew a handful of times in various situations which ranged from her shopping at Tower Records Sunset to an after party for Courtney Love and Hole post their Palladium concert. Each time she was such warm & welcoming a total sweetheart.

Here's hoping to see Drew raise her public profile again, the world needs all the positive energy it can get!

Michael's Musings

I'm Going To Bridle You In & Make You Submit
Michael Shinafelt

Just finished off a delightful wine & nosh evening with my friend Scott Jacobs. We listened to the 80's music station on my cable TV and caught up, with a side of the usual mayhem.

I also laughed so hard my dick fell out of my shorts. Kidding about the dick falling out of my shorts part, I wanted to see if you were paying attention.

Enough of my cheekiness, time to turn and face the strange. Hey it's a whole lot better than turning into the strange, or not. The decision is yours...

If I can smell your breath, you are too close

When in doubt get your monotone on with Jesus

Courtney Love is playing Kitty Menendez in an upcoming TV movie about the Menendez Brothers. Leaving this as is.

My Buddha is impressive, and yours?

What Happens At Fashion Week...

The Selfie Game
Courtney Love & Kim Kardashian-West
Unlike Vegas, what happens at Fashion Week never stays there, I am guessing due to the lack of open desert in which to dig holes. How else does one explain the most off the wall never in a million years did you think this would happen selfie of Courtney Love and Kim Kardashian-West ?!

From what could possibly be a sign that The Rapture is coming, or the Silicone Fairy has paid a visit, Kimmy KW  nabbed Courtney L and snapped both of them.

Needles to say the image ended up on Instagram, that Kim she sure is a giver.

Hey it's Monday so why not kick your week off by turning and facing the strange? That way the rest of your week will be tame by comparison.

Have a bombastic day!

"Empire" Tie One On With Cookie Tonight!

Cookie Wants Nookie!
OK, I admit while I had heard of the hottest new show to hit the airwaves, Empire, I never tuned in until Courtney Love guest starred on Episode six of the series. I am a big Hole fan (insert joke here.)

Damn it! From that point on I had yet another TV show I was addicted to. So, yes, of course I watched the first five episodes prior ON DEMAND and have watched every episode since.

Cookie Lyon, played by the awesome Taraji P Henson, is my spirit animal...I would not dream of missing tonight's two hour finale!

Empire, Empire, Empire - click your heels together three times and tie one on this Hump Day during the season one send off.

I came across the rules for a clever drinking game any Empire fan will L-O-V-E, thanks US Weekly for this you guys are da bomb!

You should take a drink…

1. Whenever Cookie offers up her nookie.
2. Whenever there’s a famous guest star.
3. Whenever Hakeem throws a bitch fit.
4. Whenever Cookie looks fierce in fur.
5. Whenever an artist threatens to leave Lucious for Beretti.
6. Whenever someone mentions the name “Bunkie,” because it is a phenomenal name.
7. Whenever someone references “being a Lyon.”
8. Whenever Jamal wears a ridiculous scarf.
9. Whenever you find yourself secretly crushing on Jamal despite his ridiculous scarf.
10. Whenever Porsha is the perfect sidekick.

Scoop! "Revenge" For Courtney Love

Courtney Love On Empire
Is anyone out there loving Courtney's return to acting? I know I am!

Starting with her story arc on the final season of Sons of Anarchy to this weeks stint as a fading rock star saved from obscurity on the hot, hot, hot break out show of the season Empire.

Up next for Ms. Love? She will be appearing on one of her favorite shows Revenge.

That's right the rocker loves the show and met with the creators of it and they came up with an awesome role for her, naturally.

It's always riveting when Courtney appears on the big and small screen. After a quite lack luster season I am finally looking forward to seeing Revenge again!

Take a look at Courtney Love on Empire below:

Tonight's The Night: Courtney Love SOA

It's "Anarchy": Katey Sagal, Courtney Love & Ally Walker
Tonight Courtney Love makes her debut on the final season of Sons of Anarchy, Hell to the Y-E-S!!!

It's been too long Courtney, glad to see you acting again in a high profile production. Sons of Anarchy is a righteous show and Ms. Love will be a perfect fit.

The Hole front woman is responsible for, what is, to me one of the best performances ever committed to film when she starred as Althea Flynt opposite Woody Harrelson as Larry Flynt, in The People vs, Larry Flynt.

She was the best thing about the film and burnt a hole, no pun intended, through the screen for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination.

Paging Emmy.

"Anarchy" On Courtney Love's 50th Birthday

Can You Feel The Courtney Love Tonight?
Courtney Love recently celebrated her 50th Birthday, HBD to you! My how time flies!

I remember having her dive into the mosh pit of The Palladium in Hollywood on top of me and my friend Brittney like it was, yesterday, and meeting her backstage after the show was pretty amazing.

So for her 50th what do you think Ms. Love does? She indulges in some anarchy Sons of Anarchy that is.

Yes, one of the ways Courtney is celebrating the big 5-0 is appearing in a multi-episode arc as Ms. Harrison -- the pre-school teacher of Jax's (Charlie Hunnam) eldest son Abel. Her character reportedly takes a special interest in Abel, which will likely catch the attention of the boy's mother, Wendy (Drea de Matteo).

She will debut in episode four of the seventh and final season of the show.

It's been too long since CL has acted, she was brilliant in The People Vs. Larry Flynt, and she won a Golden Globe Nomination for it, but not an Oscar nomination, she was snubbed in my opinion.

Salute Courtney! Hope this is a great year for you! I will be watching SOA this season, oh yes I will...

Need some love?

Not to mention the flip side "Wedding Day."

Courtney is kicking it with her Rock/Alternative roots on  "You Know My Name" this icon/artist/force of nature is truly brilliant and knocks the shit out of way more paler artists today...I'm not calling anyone out on the mediocre scale who is wildly successful for no Mother F#@king reason, Rihanna..

Lay your pimp hand down, and rock out with whatever you want to pop out with Courtney!

Thank you universe that rebel rock is not dead...Can I get an enthusiastic YES!

Carrie Borzillo Was There, Kurt Cobain's Death Remembered

Carlton Books has announced the re-issue of author/journalist Carrie Borzillo's first book, 2000's Eyewitness "Nirvana: The Day-by-Day Chronicle," with a new cover, title, and design as "Nirvana: In The Words of the People Who Were There" on April 1, 2014 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of Kurt Cobain.
The book is on sale everywhere. Mr. Borzillo is selling a limited number of signed copies direct to the fans via her official website with a percentage of each autographed copy purchased being donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Being a Nirvana fan I had to satiate my curiosity and chat with another fellow fan - one that actually authored a book on the subject, here is what transpired...

MS: So I just recently learned, with the re-issue of your book that you are a Nirvana fan.

CB: Yes, but I would never put myself up there with the real hard core Nirvana fans. I was a music journalist so I knew them professionally, and of course being a music journalist I was passionate about music and I loved them, but those real hard core Nirvana fans who are not journalists and do not work in the industry - the just love Kurt Cobain so much! Of course I'm a fan but those real ones can recite every lyric, I sometimes forget what I wrote in my own book, OK? (laughs)

MS: I'm a fan like you are a fan too, I completely love their music and what they stood for but, I can barely remember some of the things I write either. (laughs) Yeah my over the top fan days are long gone.

CB: It's great to feel passionate about music and all of that, but it's not like when you were a teenager or in your twenties.

MS: When I first listened to Nirvana their music used to hit so many deep emotional triggers for me as I have grown older I still love the music, and it still hits certain things for me, but now I look at it more as great music, it's not as emotional now.

CB: It's hard for me to listen to Nirvana still without feeling, at least for me, that huge sense of sadness. When he sings you can really hear that struggle and inner turmoil, it comes out in every word he says, every lyric, every guitar strum is so full of pain, it's hard to listen to.

MS: I'm from the Seattle area by the way.

CB: Oh Wow! Were you around when Kurt's suicide happened?

MS: I was in Los Angeles actually.

CB: I lived in Los Angeles but was flown to a party in Seattle, and was there the day it happened, what a fluke, huh? The biggest news story of my career probably. What timing, weird you know?

MS: Personally I think Kurt Cobain was the last iconic figure we will ever have in rock music.

CB: Absolutely! He was the last true tortured artist who actually had something important to say, that changed pop culture and the music industry, and flipped everything upside down. He made the un-cool people, cool, the misfits became the popular kids. He made it OK to be different and brought alternative music to mainstream. That wasn't really his intention and he honestly struggled with his being indie, cool and underground and all of the sudden that becoming the biggest commercial thing.

MS: I'm sure it was a surprise.

CB: There will never be that again, and if someone does come out again who is like a Kurt Cobain figure, we've got to start counting his days. Those true artists who are coming from a deep lace of pain and suffering are not long for this world. Kurt was never going to live past twenty-seven I think.

MS: What did you think about those who were trying to pin Kurt's murder on Courtney Love?

CB: This happens with anyone who is as big of an icon as Kurt Cobain. It happened with Jim Morrison, it happened with Elvis Presley, the only person it didn't happen with was John Lennon because that was a real clear cut incident with witnesses and everything.

MS: No debating that one.

CB: Because Kurt was such an icon and Courtney was around we he committed suicide. Of course there is going to be all these theories and mysteries, it was clear cut suicide. Listening to all of the conspiracy theories was fun, that Courtney hired somebody to kill Kurt. You know it wouldn't surprise me if Courtney ever said, or had a conversation with someone saying: "I want to kill my husband." But in this case he did this alone.

MS: Why do you think there was some doubt in people's mind?

CB: One of the facts is that the level of heroin he had in his system would not have allowed him to pull the trigger on the gun. The thing is, that is true unless you are a super junkie, Kurt was a super junkie. His tolerance level was higher than the average junkie. I mean if did that much heroin I'd be dead in a second. People always say: "Well Doctors say it's impossible" - Yes, Doctors do say that, but there is a but there, if your tolerance level is as high as Kurt's then it is possible.

MS: Exactly!

CB: With the reissue I didn't want to just capitalize on this horrible tragedy that happened, I wanted to give back and am donating some money to the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, if you buy singed copies through me on my site. It's great to celebrate his life right now, we are remembering someone who contributed so much to the music industry. But let's bring it back to what really happened: drug addiction, suicide, depression...that's what was really going on with him. Anything I can do to shine a little light on that is what I want to do.

Buy an autographed copy of "Nirvana: In The Words Of The People Who Were There" via Carrie's website and give back at: http://www.carrieborzillo.com/

I Love My "Hole" Vintage

Vintage "Hole"

"And the sky was all violet.
I wanna give my violet more violence.
And I'm the one with no soul
One above and one below"

- "Violet" Hole

A  Hole reunion is underway. Courtney  Love has confirmed that she, Eric Erlandson, Melissa Auf Der Maur, and Patty Schemel have been practicing together, reuniting a lineup that broke up in 2002.

Damn, I knew it had been long, but that long?! It's about time they are getting it together and making new music!

God this takes me back to an era of my life that I loved in Los Angeles, the one where one of the best albums ever made came out "Live Through This" and seeing Hole perform live for the first time ever at The Palladium.

I still remember how electrifying Ms. Love and company were when they took to the stage, and her crowd surfing, who could forget that! It was an amazing show! After I got to go back stage and meet Courtney who was gracious and sweet until...let's just say a random woman came up to her and whispered something in her ear and the next thing I know Courtney starts hitting and smacking her and a security guard had to pull Courtney off the woman, and for the rest of that story you will have to read my memoir...but I will add this Ms. Love did give my friend Britney, who went with me and myself a catch phrase we still utter to this day: "Get a Fucking Sharpie!"

While being older and more mellow I do not expect the same insanity to ensue that did in the days of yore mentioned above, but I can't wait for more kick ass music from one of the best bands in my mind ever!

"Pretty On The Inside," "Live Through This" and "Celebrity Skin" music that has stuck with me and never left my psyche...

So hold your breath people it's going to be an amazing bumpy ride!

Keep up with the "Hole" story on Courtney Love's Facebook Page:

Courtney Love Gives You "A Spoonful Of Bones" For Christmas

Lot's Of "Love" In This Spoonful

What else did you expect from the reigning Punk Priestess? With "Saving Mr. Banks" coming soon to a theater near you, Ms. Love decided to give us her take on the "Mary Poppins" classic "A Spoonful Of Sugar" for a spoken word piece in Garage Magazine.

This rendition that I found out about via Stephan Horbelt in Frontiers Magazine on my Facebook  home page really made my day, Thanks Stephan! We all need some edge to our Holidays, no? Because really the season tends to be a little bit overkill on the saccharine.

So for something a little different here is Ms. Courtney Love with her poetic take on a  "A Spoonful Of Sugar" - "A Spoonful Of Bones" lock up the young ones and take a swig of whiskey, or three and enjoy!

10 Seconds With: Bonded By Blood

Bonded By Blood
Southern California has become a hotbed of talented thrash metal acts in recent years, however only one band has the chops to stand out above all others. Only one band has successfully taken the risks necessary to rise above the rest. From Pomona, CA, that band is “Bonded By Blood“.

Here to crack that thrash metal whip is “Bonded By Blood” bassist, Jessie Sanchez!

MS: Growing up did you like metal music a lot?

JS: Yeah, I grew up listening to a lot of punk and thrash metal. A lot of industrial music, I used to be really big into industrial.

MS: Oh really? I really like industrial too, what are some of the bands you are into?

JS: I’m a product of the MTV Generation, I like “Ministry” and “Rammstein” a lot. “Marilyn Manson” was probably what actually was my introduction to industrial.

MS: Musically I like a lot of “Marilyn Manson” but I can’t stand them live. They toured with “Hole” one time was the reason I even saw them.

JS: Oh really?

MS: Courtney Love would just stand on stage with her guitar and be magnetic, and Marilyn Manson did all these theatrics and I was bored out of my mind. It’s funny when I saw you on stage you were great, you are so kick back normally, but on stage!

JS: It’s like an on and off switch. (laughs)

MS: Yeah, it’s called performing, the way you whipped your hair around I kept thinking about that awful Willow Smith song about “whipping your hair back and forth”. (laughs)

JS: (laughs) Well it’s part of the work uniform that’s for sure!

MS: You guys are a good balance on stage. Talk about the “thrash metal revival”.

JS: The first album was a lot more “thrash” then the albums started to get more technical. And now with “Aftermath” which is our third album we are starting to sound more mature. The album coming out is pretty much the debut of the re-vamp of the band, it’s my first time on a “Bonded By Blood” record.

MS: Congrats!

JS: Thanks. The writing process was a different one this time around than the band was used to. It was a lot more laid back, this time, we were really honest with each other if we did not like something. We jammed out riffs and tossed ideas back and forth until we came up with something that we were all satisfied with. I don’t think the group has had that kind of honesty before, people weren’t as comfortable as far as communicating with each other. With the new line-up changes everyone is more comfortable, as we are all approachable people, and not afraid to be honest with each other. As a result of this we have a new record that there is nothing on I would go back and change. I think the whole band is satisfied.
