Monday Motivation

Let's eat the music, there is a vast majority of us out there who are struggling with those Pandemic pounds. This quote from my friend Dr. Nina caught my eye, thus it is today's Monday Motivation, indeed.

I for one have never owned a scale, so honestly I do not know what I weigh at this point and juncture. All I know is that I lost a substantial amount of weight and gained a lot of it back. I used to weigh in at the gym on occasion, remember those?

For this part of my journey I am not going to weigh myself at all I'm simply going to work on being healthy and in shape, for what I want to be. Not what a piece of plastic tells me who I should be.

Another trick I use to help myself is instead of saying "I need to watch what I eat and lose some weight" I say instead "I will watch what I eat and lose some weight" Yeah, it's the little things.

Dr. Nina's Tips On How To Treat Yourself For Halloween

It's Dr. Nina
Dr. Nina Savelle-Rocklin, Psy.D. aka Dr. Nina has made a house call to Entertain Me a couple of times before.

Nina specializes in eating disorders by digging to the root of where the problem lies. She encourages people to Win The Diet War by finding the real issue at hand. Last year I had her dole out her wisdom about how to navigate what I like to call "The Eating Season," you know that time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve.

This year I got to thinking that no one ever really addresses Halloween. So I paged Dr. Nina and asked her if she would be willing to take on my favorite day of the year with her usual flair in the spirit of the season.

I promise this is not a trick, Dr. Nina is here with some awesome tips on how to treat yourself for Halloween!

1.  Afraid of the dark?  The scariest thoughts are the dark ideas you have about yourself.  Keep out thoughts like, "I suck" or "I'm too fat/stupid/ugly" or "Who would love me?"    Those thoughts just make you feel terrible about yourself.  And that's truly frightening.

Boo!
2.  Got ghosts?  If the ghosts of the past are haunting you, it's time to deal with them.  If you had a critical parent, teacher or sibling, and you find yourself being equally critical to yourself, that critical voice belongs to others, not to you.  Find your authentic voice, and view yourself as you are, not as others treated you.

3.  Give yourself a treat.  If you find yourself saying, "I'm going to be good this Halloween and not eat a single piece of candy," or "I was so bad because I ate that pumpkin cheesecake," then you're connecting your character to what you eat.  Allow yourself to eat candy on Halloween without feeling guilty.  Deprivation or anticipation of deprivation leads to overeating.   If you give yourself permission to have candy you may actually eat less!

"Just Say No"
4.  Living a zombie life?  Do you feel as if you're the walking dead, doing the same thing day after day, not truly enjoying your life to the fullest?  If so, bring yourself back to life.  Think about one thing that you've been waiting to do "one day" and make today the day you start working towards doing that thing.  If you want to run a marathon, go for a walk or a short run.  If you want to start dating, go online and check out some dating sites.

5.  Be playful.  Remember the fun of going out with your friends on Halloween?  This occasion is about being with other people, dressing up, and having fun.  So, have a great time.  Happy Halloween!!

Holiday Eating Tips With Dr. Nina

Dr. Nina Says
OK, as we are in the grip of "The Holiday Season" aka "The Eating Season" I though it would be a great idea to call in our favorite expert on eating disorders at "Entertain Me" Dr. Nina Savelle-Rocklin to offer tips to us about how to keep it in check.

Dr. Nina is awesome as she does not recommend dieting, I mean really dieting never works, she digs until she finds the root of the overeating and works with it from there. So here with a few tips to help you through the rest of "The Eating Season" is Dr. Nina!

Here are some tips and strategies for how to make it through the Holiday Season without losing control:

I suggest that trigger foods may be correlated with specific emotions.  She says, “If you are drawn to pumpkin pie and sweets, maybe you need more comfort and sweetness in your life.”

Dr. Nina also helps normalize real family dynamics during the holidays.  She asks listeners, “Does it seem as if everyone else is living in a Hallmark commercial, full of peace, love and happiness - and your family is more like a reality show?”

Check out her Holiday podcast below:

As Dr. Nina says, “If you struggle with food, weight and body image, the holidays can be difficult.  But with a little help, you can survive them without losing control, or losing your mind!”

It's "The Dr. Nina Show"

Dr. Nina is on a mission to help you "Win The Diet War" with her practice, podcast and her award winning blog.
Just when you thought there was nothing else the amazing Dr. Nina could pull out of her hat along comes her bi-weekly broadcast on YouTube - "The Dr. Nina Show"!
Dr. Nina's advice is very sound and logical and she offers very simple tips on re-thinking how you relate to yourself in terms of food. That's right people, it's not about the food, it's about the importance and power you put on it in your life.
Let's check in with Dr. N and see what she has to say about all this jazz:
"If people are struggling with overeating or binge eating, I tell them that whatever is going on with food is a "symptom" of the problem, not the actual problem (although it feels like "the" problem). Overeating is a "frenemy" - it helps you cope with painful or upsetting things, but it also hurts you.
It's important to address the underlying reasons you turn to food in the first place. When you can identify and work through those core reasons, and when you can use words for comfort and/support, you won't need food to cope".
Oh Dr. Nina knows of what she speaks having had my own set of circumstances that have taught me to look at things in a whole new way. This reprogramming of ones self is key to everything in life, not just food. Try it, you will be surprised at how much better your quality of being is, and if food is your issue, watch it's hold on you diminish with the most awesome show I have ever heard on the subject.
