Michael's Musings

What's That On Your Head? A Purple Ankh!
Michael Shinafelt
What's that you say? Why did I draw a purple Ankh on my head? Because today is LGBTQ Spirit Day! A community of which I am proud to be a part of. Support them and take a stand against bullying people, really we do have the power!

This was also the week of a movement spearheaded by Alyssa Milano. In response to the whole Harvey Weinstein debacle, those of us who have had sexual violations in our life are urged to keep the dialogue flowing with #metoo if we have suffered such abuse.

Well let's start this weeks column off on a note of positive energy, shall we?

#metoo

The Ankh is the Egyptian symbol of  life. I have one tattooed above my right ankle. Thus my use of it this week in honor of LGBTQ Spirit Day.

Oooooops! Ryan Murphy did it again, like he always does. As American Horror Story is headed into the home stretch he comes up with some grafted on story line that really has nothing to do with the rest of the show to accommodate a famous person who wants to guest star. In this case Lena Dunham as Valerie Solanas - pointless and boring, I was on Instagram most of the show. You'd think he'd learn, but no.

Film Buff Friday: Blood Feast

Nom, Nom, Nom, Nom...

The notorious HGL's masterpiece of gore just in time for Halloween...Boo!

Blood Feast [Dual Format] (10/10)

The filmography of late movie maverick Herschell Gordon Lewis brims with the mad, macabre, and just downright bizarre. But perhaps the most unhinged of all his directorial efforts, and certainly the most influential, must surely be his original gore-fest Blood Feast - the first ever splatter movie.

Dorothy Fremont is looking to throw a party unlike any other, and she gets just that when she hires the decidedly sinister Fuad Ramses to cater the event. Promising to provide her guests with an authentic Egyptian feast, Ramses promptly sets about acquiring the necessary ingredients - the body parts of nubile young women!

Featuring a host of stomach-churning gore gags including the infamous tongue sequence and much more nastiness besides, Herschell Gordon Lewis' Blood Feast more than lives up to its name and remains essential viewing for any self-respecting splatter fan.

The Horror: Margaret Cho Speaks To The Dead

Margaret Cho
That's right people, she does. Did you happen to see her guest starring on the Jennifer Love Hewitt show "Ghost Whisperer" where she played Occult Anthropology Professor Avery Grant who was quite taken off guard that her teachings had some truth to them with the help of ghost visitations and a Ouija Board?

Well she did indeed speak to the dead on the show, Boo! Interestingly enough Margaret has an extensive collection of Ouija Boards, yes that's correct, one of the most popular stand-up comics on the planet loves her some Ouija's -  so it being the Halloween Season and all, I asked Margaret to tell me her scariest experience with one.

Margaret Cho & Jennifer Love Hewitt on "Ghost Whisperer"
Tell us about it, Margaret ...

"We have Ouija Boards all over my house, and once I looked at one of the very vintage boards - probably from the turn of the century or before, and it seemed that the planchette  was moving on its own. It's kind of an Egyptian/art deco thing, and no one was touching the planchette, it was just circling the board by itself, like it had a motor or something. Then I found out my husband had rigged the board with a battery operated planchette! No ghosts from the afterlife trying to contact me. Just a 9 volt battery strapped to the inside - but boy it was scary looking!"

Ouija Board

That would be scary and what great Halloween prank!

Margaret is currently on tour with her stand-up show "Mother" and is also doing her podcast "Monsters of Talk" with Jim Short.
