Remembering Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain
Maresa Wickham
While I never had the pleasure of meeting Anthony Bourdain, by all accounts he was a great guy who seemingly had it all. I could address depression and suicide, yet I am hardly qualified to do so. Having been through a clinical depression myself, all I can say is it's a beast.

I thought it would be nice to serve Anthony's memory by reprinting a first hand experience from someone who knew and adored him. My friend Maresa Wickham worked with him in 2006 here is what she had to say about the man:

This one hits a little harder... one of my inspirational idols... I was honored to work with him in 2006 and was so impressed at how nice and how real he was. Such an interesting guy who seemed to have it all. My dream.

"Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s OK. The journey changes you; it should change you... You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind." RIP Anthony Bourdain

Here's a handsome shot of him from our Travel Channel promos video shoot.

Daedalus' Daughter

If you happen to live in Los Angeles or are visiting, you may be interested in this...

Bootleg Theater presents the world premiere of Daedalus’ Daughter, by Carol Katz, in association with Rosanna Gamson/World Wide, an original movement theatre piece for five performers. Opening on Thursday, September 21st and running through Saturday, September 30, 2017, Daedalus’ Daughter uses the Greek myth of Daedalus and his son Icarus as its primary metaphor for mental illness: the story of struggle, escape, flight and falling, as told from the point of view of an imagined female figure – Daedalus’ daughter. Both intimate and epic, the poetic performance piece weaves original and found text with rich visual imagery and full-bodied, choreographed movement, to create a poignant meditation on a secret family history. The abstract new work was inspired by playwright and director Katz’s own lifelong struggle with bipolar disorder and the journey it took her on. For more information, please visit https://www.carolkatzprojects.org.

"I have created this story, Daedalus’ Daughter, as a way to talk about madness and suicide that can run through family lines; its survivors, its legacy, its gifts, its ghosts,” explains Katz. “It is a meditation on my own family history, and how it has affected some or all of us in deeply personal ways. I did not find out that my grandfather had taken his own life until relatively late, yet I have been touched, if not defined, by his death all my life. This piece is for those who follow in these footsteps without ever knowing why, and for those we leave behind.”

With a one-hour run time, Daedalus’ Daughter will open on Thursday, September 21st and run for six performances over two weeks – on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30pm – through September 30, 2017. Pre-sale tickets are $20 ($15 for students/seniors) and will be $25 at the door ($20 for students/seniors). Bootleg Theater is located at 2220 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90057. For tickets, please call 213-389-3856 or visit http://www.bootlegtheater.org/event/1554271-daedalus-daughter-los-angeles.

Daedalus’ Daughter brings together a collaborative team of Los Angeles theatre and dance artists under the direction of Carol Katz, assisted by critically acclaimed choreographer, Rosanna Gamson. Created though an extended and deeply collaborative process, the piece was very much devised in partnership with the ensemble of actors and dancers: Sean SpannKirk WilsonClementine Gamson LevyLavinia Findikoglu and Kearian GiertzMallory Fabian is on board as Associate Creative Producer and Tom E Kelley is engineering the props and set construction. Lighting Designer, Darius Gangei, Sound Designer Simon Greenberg, and Scenic Designer Tanya Orellana, all from CalArts, round out the creative team.

SYNOPSIS:
Daedalus' Daughter, an original dance theatre piece by Carol Katz, is a retelling of the Icarus myth from the point of view of his sister, interwoven with a secret family history. This half-bird, half-girl is an embodied metaphor, a symbolic way to talk about the madness and suicide that can run through generations of families. So while this is an intimate story about one woman’s real family, it speaks to countless others who have dealt with the pain and sorrow of mental illness in their own. It is a story about the costs of keeping things hidden in shame and silence – yet ultimately it is about the hope and redemption that are possible when these secrets are acknowledged and claimed. There is a powerful and healing magic when someone speaks their own truth, and realizes that they are not alone. Told through movement and text, both poetic and prosaic, this piece is a surreal, dream like journey through myth and memory.

Making Out With "The Joker" Is Nasty

Whose Lipstick Is Best?
Jared Leto & Margot Robbie
One would think getting up close and personal with Jared Leto would be all kinds of sexy, right?

Well apparently it's nasty, and not in the fun way, when he is made-up to portray The Joker in Suicide Squad

Co-Star Margot Robbie who plays Harley Quinn his love interest and partner in crime explains that there were 10 minute make-up touch ups in between takes of the kissing scenes. Now I am not sure how many of you are familiar with the technical end of how takes work, but that is a massive effort for one shot, wow!

But, she had no problem putting the moves on Leto in his scary ass Joker get up. Once you get over the initial shock she explained it becomes normal.

I bet! Suicide Squad opens Friday. Check out the trailer below...

Ponyboy: "Nobody Wants To Die On Christmas, Unless They Have To"

Ponyboy: Whose Package Is Bigger?
l-r Charles McVey & David Zey
Merry Christmas Peeps! I could not pass up the Holiday Season without posting one of my favorite modern Christmas songs by art fag alternative rock group Ponyboy.

This writer is a  HUGE Ponyboy fan and I have promoted them heavily here on Entertain Me. The group consists of two brilliant musicians/artists/raconteurs Charles McVey and David Zey. Their music is unapologetic, edgy and brutally honest.

"I'm Gonna Kill Myself On Christmas"  addresses the issue of LGBTQ suicides around the "happiest time of the year." While satirical in it's approach the underlying message is loud and clear.

Christmas is not only about giving and family. It's about being thankful. Please take the time to be grateful and give thanks to the universe for what you have and to realize there are others out there who are in pain.

If you are one of those people who is hurting please reach out to others for help. Trust me it's out there and people are willing if you ask.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Enjoy the video after the jump!

Jared Leto "Suicide Green"

Love This Joker: Jared Leto
This has been making the rounds on the Internet, yep, it's the first image of Jared Leto as The Joker in the D.C. villains themed film Suicide Squad - Writer/Director David Ayer tweeted it on Friday night.

While some of you may be going: Yikes! I am going, bring it sexy! Something about this Joker makes me want to push myself to the edge and take the plunge!

Leto can even make evil & freaky, F#@king Hot!

I'm especially loving the "Damaged" tattoo across his forehead, not to mention all the other ones one his body...I now know what I want for Christmas.

R.I.P: Tony Scott

This writer is indeed sorry to hear of Director Tony Scott's recent suicide, it was revealed today that he took his life over an inoperable brain tumor.

Tony directed many prolific films such as "Top Gun" & "True Romance" - most people forget (since it is so different from the rest of his repertoire) That he directed the elegant and artsy vampire flick "The Hunger".

With three of the most interesting leads in cinema history, the elegant and timeless Catherine Deneuve, the sexy and sensual Susan Sarandon & the enigmatic and never boring David Bowie.

This was a film that shaped me in my youth. Thanks to my late Father I have always had a thing for horror films. Cut to my first job ever in at the tender age of 16 in a movie theatre - and guess what film played in it, you guessed it "The Hunger"...

A modern take on vampire's it was the first time I had seen horror and eroticism blended so elegantly and artistically - this showed how horror could be adult and exciting. Since I got to see movies for free, I watched this at least 10 times! Sadly Hollywood does not make adult horror anymore and that's really a shame, and I think Scott's vampire yarn was pretty close to the last of this breed.

Tony Scott's "The Hunger" is one of the great modern horror films of American Cinema - and it really affected this writer, in fact one of my proudest possessions is the original lobby poster which I acquired on the job, I have it framed in my apt.

While there are many memories for everyone of this late great director of cinema, this is my personal and favorite one.
