Love Story: Marla & Dave Thomas

Marla & Dave Thomas

Happy Valentine's Day! Today we are celebrating it with Marla & Dave Thomas, they have been married 34 years!

Dave is a ten time Grammy Award Winner from the band Take 6. Marla is a celebrity realtor. What's the secret to their long lasting love story?

Well let's let them tell us, shall we? Take it away Marla & Dave!

MS: After 34 years of marriage, how do you maintain a healthy relationship?

DAVE: Our friendship is the foundation of our marriage.

MARLA: Occasionally, when we forget about the friendship, a good brisk tennis/pickleball match resets things.

MS: Did you have any inkling when you met in the second grade that you would be together?

MARLA: Do ducks breed with pigeons? When we met, we despised each other! I was new to the elementary school he was already attending. I had a super short afro, so he kept referring to me as a boy. I had to wait for puberty to set the record straight.

MS: Were there relationship stresses that came from your role in the 10x Grammy Award-winning Take 6?

DAVE: Obviously! Take 6 has always been a world wide touring group. In the early days of our career, we would easily tour 250 days of the year. That has continued. Pre-pandemic, we toured at least 150 days a year. That much time away from home puts a tremendous strain on any relationship.

MS: What were the relationship stresses that may have come from building your business as a celebrity realtor?

MARLA: Every career endeavor that I undertake has the same set of challenges. Balancing the ongoing crisis of our adult children who suffer from varying mental health diagnosis, maintaining the function of our life and finances, all while occasionally taking time out to play with Dave on the road.

MS: During such a long marriage, you've undoubtedly gone through ups and downs - how have you weathered those moments together?

MARLA: I would venture to say that intermittent distance has worked well for us both. Time apart for our personality types gives us both time to regroup and be reminded about the reason we chose to make this crazy “forever” commitment to each other.

MS: How did your mental health advocacy come about?

MARLA: Our story is a very public one. We are the parents of 3 children who now range in ages are 34-32-29. The two oldest have struggled with various issues throughout their life. It wasn’t until the two oldest were young adults and experienced various serious mental health crises did we discover the source of their issues. As most parents would do, we kicked into gear to find solutions to “fix” their problems. Once we understood that their diagnosis would mean a lifetime of management, but never a cure, our foundation “Loving Beyond Reason” was born.

DAVE: We are determined to both erase the stigma surrounding mental illness and to help other families that make the decision to care for their loved ones,  who suffer with brain differences beyond what seems to be,  find solutions.

MS: What do hope to accomplish via your podcast Mental Health Mondays with Marla and Dave?

MARLA: MHM Podcast is on air for one reason, “to be a bridge that everyone can cross to be free of the stigma attached to brain/personality differences, by sharing personal stories and information”.  It is our core belief that transparency is transforming. We have an open platform that welcomes people from all walks of life to bring their personal stories of pain and purpose to a protected platform.

MS: And what is the mission of your Loving Beyond Reason foundation?

DAVE: LBR is on a mission to provide services and education to families with loved ones who suffer with mental health challenges. Now that we have first hand experience about all the cracks that prohibit treatment and recovery, we intend to help others navigate more effectively to help their adult loved ones who suffer.

MS: What message are you sending to Marla on this Valentine's Day?

DAVE: Many people can talk about love, with all that means, but when you and I say “I love you”, it comes with a lifetime of experiences. I wouldn’t - couldn’t - choose anyone else to spend my life with other than you. I love you!

MS: What message do you for Dave on this Valentine's Day?

MARLA: Don’t ever get it twisted. Sometimes I want to knock your block off, but then I stop and  realize how much that would cost us in medical bills. So, I remind myself that you are my best friend, and how much I love you. Seriously, despite our challenges in this life, there is no better human that I have encountered, and there is the added bonus that I get to spend my whole life with my best friend (well…whatever’s left of it). I Love because you’re you. Never change!

Hump Day & VD

Feel The Love
Sandy Zacky & Mike Clifford
This week Hump Day is brought to you by the letters V & D, rather than "Chill,"
because "yes" beautiful people, Valentines Day falls in the middle of the week.

What better way to celebrate than with Entertain Me's resident chanteuse Sandy with a "Y" not "E" Zacky and her singing partner Mike Clifford? Featuring the title track from their joint CD Love is Everything...duh!

Today is the day we are are given a spoonful of love via every media outlet that can spurt word vomit to make it the focus of the day.

So why not me?! However I am prescribing love in general today. Not love to that one "special" person. If you have someone like that, spectacular! But if not, you can still spread love. It's about being a good person today & everyday.

Get to it and spread your VD love!

Happy Valentines Day Peeps!

"The Very Thought Of You"

54 Years Strong!
Sandy & Ron Zacky
"I see your face in every flower, Your eyes in stars above, It's just the thought of you,
The very thought of you, my love" - The Very Thought Of You

Happy Valentine's Day! Even if you aren't in a relationship this is a day to celebrate love, love, love...and we all have someone, or something that is special to us.

As you know Entertain Me likes to celebrate this day with it's resident chanteuse Sandy with a "Y" not "E" Zacky. She is an expert on L-O-V-E as this past November, she and her husband Ron celebrated their 54th Wedding Anniversary!!!

Imagine finding a love like that, that is cause for celebration, no? So pop the champagne and we will! With Sandy with a "Y" not "E" singing The Very Thought Of You from her acclaimed CD One Olive or Two.

The pop hit was originally sung by Al Bowlly in 1934

Today give the tip of the hat to the best emotion of all and let someone know you love them during these trying times.

As Sandy with a "Y" not "E" says to all of you: "I Wish You Love!"

Sandy Zacky "I Wish You Love"

50 Plus Years Of Marriage: Sandy & Her Husband Ron Taken On Her Birthday This Year
"I wish you bluebirds in the spring, to give your heart a song to sing,
And then a kiss, but more than this, i wish you love" - I Wish You Love

Nothing says love like a fifty plus year marriage and that's what Entertain Me's resident chanteuse Sandy with a "Y" not "E" Zacky has.

In 2007 Sandy with her singing partner Mike Clifford recorded an album Love is Everything. A compilation of songs about what else? Love! Including a duet by herself & Clifford on the title track and a solo rendition by Ms. Z of I Wish You Love.

Sandy has this to say to all of you on this Valentine's Day: "Whatever your plans and wherever you are I wish you all love, health and happiness, Happy Valentine's Day, Love Sandy."

Thanks Sandy, back at ya!

Sandy Zacky Wishes You A Happy Valentine's Day

It's that time of year again, Valentine's Day - and for this day I always call on resident chanteuse Sandy with a "Y" not "E" Zacky as she knows something about love, her marriage is going on fifty-two years!

So I asked Ms. Z to name a couple of love songs she was especially fond of to celebrate today, here is what she had to say:

First of all I don't  know if I have mentioned it before, but "Love Is Everything", from my CD with Mike Clifford is such a beautiful love song. He and I were discussing that just the other day. It is still doing, great on "Show Me Talk Radio."  Donna Linn put it up last Valentine's day and it was a listener favorite for months.

Also "The Nearness of You"  and a song that goes back to when I was a kid from the Eddie Duchin Story, "You're My Everything."

Sandy Zacky & Mike Clifford
There is nothing in recent generations that stands out to me. There may be great ones but nothing comes to mind...Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!

Hey Sandy thanks for stopping by, Happy Valentine's Day to you and Ron and to everyone out there!

Sandy Zacky "Love Is Everything"

Sandy & Her Husband Ron
Happy Valentine's Day Everyone ! On this day of love I thought I would check in with "Entertain Me"s favorite Chanteuse Sandy with a "Y" not "E" Zacky.

Sandy has been a busy performer with a Birthday Tribute of her music on "Oldies Your Way" with Bud Francis www.oldiesyourway.com .

Also not one but two programs on Donna Linn's "Show Me Talk Radio" one called "Sandy Zacky Radio" www.showmetalkradio.com .

The other for the lover of life & people that Ms. Z is a Valentine's Day Gift "Love Is Everything - A Valentine's Day Special" with her singing partner Mike Clifford www,showmetalkradio.com/jukebox.php .

Ms. Zacky recently celebrated her 50th, yes that's right, her 50th Wedding Anniversary with her husband Ron. So who better to wish you all a Happy Day Of Love than Sandy with a "Y" -

Here with  Valentine's Day wishes for everyone is Ms. Sandy Zacky...!

1) I wish everyone love. All kinds of love. Partners, kids, friends, pets heroes, anyone that brightens ones life and makes them smile on this day or any day.

2) Sharing with one who may not have someone in their life to make them feel special. Call them, send a card, an e-mail, whatever lets them know you are thinking about them.

3) Complement someone. Someone you know, or better yet, someone you don't.

4) Smile at everyone you see that day. Even though they may not return the smile somewhere in their heart they're feeling it.

5) Don't forget to call a loved one you may not have spoken to in awhile. It will make both of you feel good. Somehow we forget the ones we should never forget.

6) Also,I don't care what anyone says, a box of chocolates, preferably See's, because all others, Godiva, or whatever is "the" chocolate of the day may be, nothing beats SEE'S,(even though I can't eat candy).

Bring on the See's! with Sandy at:

Love Is Everything

While debating whether or not to post something in honor of Valentine's Day today, thinking "'is it really necessary, will it really matter"? I got inspired.

"Entertain Me" staple Sandy, with a "Y" not "E" Zacky performed a show a few years back with her singing partner, Mike Clifford at Vitello's in Studio City, CA on Valentine's Day.

Nobody does a love song better than Ms. Z, and the CD she cut with Clifford bears the title "Love Is Everything" ...in celebration of that notion, I bring you Sandy Zacky & Mike Clifford crooning that very song, don't say I never did you any favors.

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone....Enjoy!

Checking In With: Jonathan Brett

It’s time, give you a formal intro to Mr. Jonathan Brett, an “Entertain Me” staple for his YouTube show “Mr. Meatballs Takes on Life”.

Well JB (as his friends know him) is an actor/performer with much more diversity and talent than just his “Meatballs”.

From guest starring on the CBS series “Cold Case” to the indie horror comedy “Stupid Teenagers Must Die” - J. Brett has proven himself a talented actor who can take on a variety of roles.

This is especially apparent with his two current projects, a role in a movie from The Asylum: “Celebrity Sex Tape” and a lead in the premiere play “Geeks - The Musical”.

OK - JB, let’s do it!

MS: Hey JB where are you right now?

JB: I just got finished with an audition for a Toyota commercial.

MS: Very cool, glad to catch you in the car, Mr. Busy! So you are in the Valentine’s Day video release from The Asylum “Celebrity Sex Tape.”

JB:  Yes I am!
"Celebrity Sex Tape"

MS: Why is that a Valentine’s Day release?

JB: Ya know, I couldn’t tell you actually (laughs) It’s a one of those “geek falls in love and gets his love” type of things…so, it kind of is a Valentine’s Day release, with a lot of sex in it! (laughs) A good Valentine’s Day for most people is sex so…

MS: Tell people a little about your character.

JB: His name is Ed, his nickname is “Sex Ed” he gets that nickname toward the middle of the movie. Basically if this were “American Pie” he would be the “Stifler” character. He’s always talking about sex, everything is about how he can get laid. Ed is a cool sex guy (laughs)

MS: Rumor has it The Asylum is a great movie company to work with.

JB: The Asylum is great, they’re a group of professionals. I never thought you could knock out a 120 page script in 10 shooting days. They knew how to do it, and they did it with class and integrity and I am sure it will turn out fantastic.

MS: My friend Liz Adams (Director, of The Asylum’s “Air Collision”) really liked working with them too.

JB: They were truly great people to work with, I made a lot of lasting friendships out of it. It was a lot of fun and these are people I will know for the rest of my life.

MS: It’s like the old Roger Corman system.

JB: Yes, they crank out a lot of good material for a low budget and are very successful, they know what they are doing.

MS: Well, I have a feeling you have told us as much about “Celebrity Sex Tape” that you are able to.

"Celebrity Sex Tape"
JB: Yeah, before something is out, you aren’t really sure what you can and can’t say, I don’t think I gave too much away.

MS: Nah, you didn’t - How excited are you to be the lead in a brand new musical BTW?

JB: I’m very excited about it! It’s called “Geeks - The Musical” which I think has the potential to go to, at least Off-Broadway. The concept has yet to make it to a Broadway stage, there are so many geeks in the world it’s about time they had a musical!

MS: When does it open?

JB: March 1st at Write Act Reparatory Theatre in Hollywood, CA. It’s up on Plays 411 now which is also very exciting!

MS: How many musical numbers do you have?

JB: So far I’ve got 9. They are also thinking about adding me to the opening number too, normally every character is in the opening number and that would bring it up to 10. I’m really excited for it, it’s going to be a lot of fun! It also takes place somewhere really geeky, the Comi-Con Convention.

MS: Perfect! You have done a lot of varied things in the body of your work. What would be your ultimate dream gig to have?

JB: My ultimate dream, and I am going to do this, is to be a cast member on “Saturday Night Live.”

MS: How cool!

JB: SNL is so influential, and they’ve gotten very political over the years, which is fine. But I would really like to be part of bringing SNL back to it’s roots, when it was good sketch comedy that was timeless.
